Night photography tutorial – long exposure

Easy steps to learn night photography through incremental trials

This easy night photography tutorial will help you in few easy steps how to master night photography, the easiest way is do spend few hours and test all settings in manual mode.

You will need your camera, a tripod and a good spot , preferably to see night traffic as per our example.

Without getting into very technical details, by following this simple example you can not only learn how to take incredible night shots, but you will undertsnad better how the long exposures are being taken, and how to camera works in low light condition

So without further delay, my proposal is to set your camera on manual mode, fix ISO 100, set the widest aperture you have (in our case we use a Canon 24-70 F2.8 with the maximum aperture of 2.8) and vary the shutter speed starting with a reasonable 1/90 of a second, or even faster, but I can assure you , faster than this it will be dark completely

In this moment you can leave the shutter speed at 10 seconds and go back in increments by decreasing the aperture.

This is where we ended up in comparison with the image below where we started.

So after several trials in this manner, you can play with your settings and you select the picture you like the most and you are done.

Once you do go through all combinations of shutter speed and aperture, you can repeat all exercises , but this time increase the ISO

After 2-3 hours, you should be able to know how your camera settings will give you the result you want. As a conclusion, you need long exposure for the dramatic and interesting light trails
