high speed sports photography

Hello,

My name is Emil Naydenov.

Christian invited me to share a few of the photos that I took at the MotoGP Race in Indianapolis and I am extremely overjoyed to be given such opportunity.

Most of the photography I do is landscapes and portraits but I don’t have any experience in fast motion photography so this was a new and exciting experience for me.

I have 4 photos that I would like to share and talk about.

Tthe first photo that I took at the track I was standing in one place and took the shot right when the bike was infront of me. After I took the photo I looked at it and thought he was moving too fast and my shutter speed is too slow.

So for the second photo I put the dial on shutter priority, dialed 1/4000 sec. and shot it.

It looked much better, the motorcycle and the rider were not blurry any more but still it didn’t look right, it looked like he was just standing still when actually he was moving very fast, the motion was not there.

After thinking about it for minute I decided to try something else. I dialed 1/320 sec. on the shutter speed and decided to follow the motorcycle with the camera when I took the shot.  After a few shots I was able to get the bike in good focus and this is what it ended up looking like. (Following the bike kept it in focus while the slower shutter speed did not freeze the backgound and created the blur)

Mission accomplished! The bike and the rider looked sharp and you could tell they were moving. After this shot I decided to experiment and go even slower so changed the shutter speed to 1/80 sec. , I had to take a few shots to get it just right aaand… BINGO!

This was exactly the immage I had in my mind and was hoping to capture when I took the first one.

Fast motion photography is very challenging but very rewarding and I am looking forward to the next race!

I want to thank Christian for letting me share this with all of you and I hope you found it interesting. If you have any comments or would like to check out some of my other photos you can visit my Google+ page @ https://plus.google.com/+EmilNaydenov
